About This Trip

Tanzania's Northern Circuit is the most famous safari route in Africa, and this nine-day private journey travels its classic heart — Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti — with one distinctive twist: it is built around walking. Where most safaris keep you inside a vehicle, this itinerary puts you on foot in the wilderness, led by an armed ranger and a specialist walking guide, so you experience the bush at a human pace and through all of your senses.

You begin in Arusha and travel the circuit by private 4x4 with your own guide: the baobab-studded elephant country of Tarangire, the wildlife-packed floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, and finally three nights at Wayo Serengeti Green Camp, a low-impact camp where walking safaris take precedence over game drives. An optional hot-air balloon safari can be added for a dawn drift over the plains, and your journey ends with a scenic charter flight from the Serengeti to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Every departure is private and the itinerary is fully flexible.

At A Glance

  • Two nights in Tarangire National Park
  • Game drives among giant baobabs and large elephant herds
  • Optional guided bush walk with an armed ranger
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Itinerary Details

After breakfast you drive south to Tarangire National Park, one of the northern circuit's most underrated gems. Famous for its ancient baobab trees and some of the largest elephant herds in Tanzania, Tarangire follows the life-giving Tarangire River, which draws huge concentrations of game — elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and their attendant predators — especially in the dry months.

Here your walking journey begins in earnest. Alongside classic game drives, you can set out on foot with an armed ranger and your guide to learn the smaller stories of the bush: tracks in the dust, birdsong, medicinal plants and the constant signs left by animals that pass through unseen. It is a slower, quieter, more intimate way to understand this landscape — the perfect introduction before the Serengeti.

At A Glance

  • Scenic drive to the Ngorongoro highlands
  • Full day exploring the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater
  • Big Five game viewing in a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Itinerary Details

You continue to the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and one of the most extraordinary wildlife arenas on Earth. Descending some 600 metres to the crater floor, you enter a natural amphitheatre where around 25,000 large animals live year-round — including the endangered black rhino, making Ngorongoro one of the best places in Africa to complete the Big Five.

With lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, flamingo and vast herds of grazers concentrated within the crater walls, a single day here delivers some of the richest game viewing of the whole safari. The surrounding highlands are also home to the Maasai, who still graze their cattle on the crater rim, and there is time to take in the sweeping views before you press on toward the Serengeti.

Itinerary Details

Now the heart of the journey. You travel into the Serengeti to your home for the next three nights, Wayo Serengeti Green Camp — a low-impact, solar-powered mobile camp designed around one thing above all: exploring the wilderness on foot. This is why the camp anchors the itinerary; here the walking safari takes precedence over the vehicle, and the wild plains open up at a human pace.

Each morning you set out at first light with an armed ranger and a specialist walking guide, reading tracks, watching the plains come alive and getting close to the details a game drive rushes past — the insects, the birds, the plants and the smaller dramas of the ecosystem. Game drives are still available to reach the wider herds, but the emphasis is firmly on the quiet privilege of walking through one of the greatest wildernesses on the planet.

For a different perspective, an optional hot-air balloon safari can be arranged at additional cost: a serene dawn drift over the Serengeti followed by a champagne bush breakfast on the plains. Simply let us know in advance and we will build it into your stay.

Itinerary Details

After a last morning in the Serengeti, you transfer to the nearest airstrip for your shared charter flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport — a scenic flight of around 60 minutes that trades the long drive back for a final aerial view of the plains you have walked. On arrival your safari comes to a close.

If your journey continues — to the beaches of Zanzibar or an onward international connection — we are happy to arrange the flights and transfers to carry you smoothly to your next destination.
