About This Trip

This ten-day private safari is built around the greatest wildlife spectacle on Earth — the Great Migration and its dramatic river crossings. Timed for the northern Serengeti season, it follows almost two million wildebeest and zebra as they mass along the Mara River, where giant Nile crocodiles wait and the herds must brave the water on their endless search for fresh grazing. It is nature at its most raw, unscripted and unforgettable.

You travel the classic northern circuit by private 4x4 with your own guide: the baobab-studded elephant country of Tarangire, a dawn with the Hadzabe and Datoga peoples at Lake Eyasi, the wildlife-packed floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, and three nights in the Serengeti positioned to follow the movement of the herds. Because the migration is always on the move, your Serengeti nights are tailored to the season you travel, so you are always in the right place at the right time. The journey ends with a scenic flight to West Kilimanjaro for an immersive stay among the Maasai, before departing from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Every departure is private and fully flexible.

At A Glance

  • Two nights in Tarangire National Park
  • Game drives among giant baobabs and large elephant herds
  • Riverine wildlife along the Tarangire River
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Itinerary Details

After breakfast you set off from Arusha, travelling through Maasai country to Tarangire National Park with picnic lunch boxes and a game drive along the way. After the Serengeti, Tarangire holds the greatest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania, and in the dry season the Tarangire River becomes a magnet for thirsty animals — a stage for lion, leopard, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and antelope.

Above all, Tarangire is elephant country, home to the largest concentration of elephants in the whole country and unrivalled chances to watch entire families interact at close range. It is also one of the few places to spot dry-country antelope such as oryx and gerenuk. With its ancient baobab trees and sweeping views over the Maasai Steppe, Tarangire is the perfect opening act before the drama of the migration.

At A Glance

  • Scenic drive to Lake Eyasi in the Great Rift Valley
  • Morning with the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers
  • Visit the Datoga blacksmiths and pastoralists
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Itinerary Details

Today you leave the wildlife behind for one of Tanzania's most authentic cultural encounters. You drive to the shores of Lake Eyasi, a soda lake in the Great Rift Valley that is home to the Hadzabe — one of the last true hunter-gatherer peoples on Earth, whose way of life has continued largely unchanged for tens of thousands of years.

At dawn you join the Hadzabe on a hunt, moving quietly through the bush as they track game with handmade bows and read the land in ways few outsiders ever witness. Nearby you also meet the Datoga, skilled pastoralists and blacksmiths who forge arrowheads and jewellery by hand. It is a humbling, eye-opening day and a powerful counterpoint to the wildlife spectacle to come. You overnight close to Lake Eyasi.

At A Glance

  • Early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater
  • Full morning of game viewing on the crater floor
  • Big Five in a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Itinerary Details

After an early breakfast you aim to be among the first vehicles descending some 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera. This natural enclosure supports 20,000 to 30,000 animals at any one time — virtually a Noah's ark holding almost every species indigenous to East Africa, and one of the best places on the continent to see the endangered black rhino.

With the highest predator densities in Africa, the crater delivers superb sightings of lion, hyena and leopard alongside elephant, buffalo, hippo and flamingo, all within its towering walls. It is one of the natural wonders of the world, and a single morning here yields some of the richest game viewing of the entire safari before you set your sights on the Serengeti.

  • Three nights in the Serengeti, positioned to follow the herds
  • The famous Mara River crossings (northern Serengeti season)
  • Giant Nile crocodiles, big cats and endless plains
  • Optional hot-air balloon safari at sunrise (additional cost)
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Itinerary Details

Now the great crescendo of your journey. You travel into the Serengeti — its name means "endless plains" — for three nights positioned to follow the movement of the Great Migration, the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet, as almost two million wildebeest and zebra follow the rains across the ecosystem.

Between roughly July and October the herds mass in the northern Serengeti along the Mara River, and this is the time and place to witness the famous river crossings. Giant Nile crocodiles lie in wait as the wildebeest gather on the banks, hesitate, and then plunge across in a churning, thunderous rush toward Kenya's Masai Mara — one of the most dramatic events in the natural world. Crossings are unpredictable by nature, so with three full days here your guide gives you the time and patience to be in the right place when it happens.

Because the migration is always on the move, your exact Serengeti route is tailored to the season you travel — the northern crossings from July to October, the southern calving grounds around Ndutu from December to March, or the central plains in between. For a different perspective, an optional hot-air balloon safari can be arranged at additional cost: a serene dawn drift over the plains followed by a champagne bush breakfast.

  • Final morning game drive in the Serengeti
  • Scenic flight from the Serengeti to West Kilimanjaro
  • Immersive stay among the Maasai in the Kilimanjaro foothills
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Itinerary Details

After a last morning on the plains, you transfer to a Serengeti airstrip for a scenic flight to West Kilimanjaro, trading the long drive for a final aerial view of the wilderness below. You arrive at the foot of Africa's highest mountain, deep in the wilderness of the Maasai steppe, for a very different kind of experience.

Here you stay among the Maasai in a setting built entirely around community and culture. Rather than simply observing, you are welcomed in — sharing stories and traditions, learning about Maasai customs and rituals, and slowing to the rhythm of one of Africa's most iconic peoples. With sweeping views of Kilimanjaro and the savanna beyond, it is a gentle, reflective close to a journey defined by drama and movement.
