Where is Zanzibar?

You might have heard of the stunning beaches and clear blue water in Zanzibar, but aren’t sure where the island is. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania in East Africa. It’s in the Indian Ocean just a short ferry ride away from the major city of Dar Es Salaam.

It’s part of the Republic of Tanzania. If you’re coming to Tanzania for tourism or safaris, you can use the same visa for both places.

After spending a week or longer doing safaris and exploring the national parks of Tanzania, most people come to Zanzibar to finish their East African holiday. Zanzibar is especially popular for honeymooners as it’s a warm and romantic destination.

There are several islands that makeup Zanzibar. Most travellers come to the largest and main island called Unguja. The other islands are Mafia and Pemba. While anyone can travel to these neighbouring islands, they are most popular for visitors that want to go scuba diving.

Which Country is Zanzibar a Part Of?

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania. It’s in a political union with Tanzania, but they have a different president and their own cabinet. They also have a separate house of representatives with 50 members. Zanzibar has its own elections every 5 years that are separate from mainland Tanzania.

Although they are a semi-autonomous territory, Zanzibar still has many of the same customs, traditions, and food as Tanzania. They also speak Swahili like the mainland area.

Whether you go through Zanzibar’s immigration or immigration at one of the airports in Tanzania, you’re issued the same tourist visa.

When entering Zanzibar from Tanzania at the airport, you will go through an immigration checkpoint. You will need to show your passport and visa before entering Zanzibar, so make sure not to forget them!

What Currency is Used in Zanzibar?

The official currency of Zanzibar is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). This is the same currency used in Tanzania, so you do not need to exchange currency when entering the island. Some of the large tourist places accept US dollars, but you should withdraw Tanzanian shillings since this is the main currency.

What Do I Need to Know Before Visiting Zanzibar?

The main thing to know is that although Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, things are done a little differently on the island. The lifestyle is more relaxed and you will need to learn to follow “Swahili time.”

Unless you’re going to a business meeting, you shouldn’t expect people to show up on time. It’s appropriate and not rude to even be several hours late when meeting people. Since you’re on vacation, you’ll find the relaxing and unrushed lifestyle welcoming.

Another thing to know is that you need to remember to greet people when walking by them. You should also give a short greeting to workers in the hotels and restaurants before you proceed to ask them a question.

You can simply say “mambo” which means hello. The locals will love you trying to speak their language and they will be ready to teach you more words.

What’s Special About Zanzibar?

What’s not special about Zanzibar? This should be the real question. Zanzibar is one of the most visited places in Africa because it’s a prime spot for all water activities including snorkeling and scuba diving.

You might also hear Zanzibar referred to as “Spice Island.” It’s one of the top production places in the world for cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and pepper. When in Zanzibar, head to Stone Town for a spice tour. It’s the perfect opportunity to see where the spices are grown. You can also taste them and buy some to bring home.

Zanzibar also has a unique history that you can learn more about at some of the top attractions around the island. Head to the Zanzibar Slave Market to see the island’s intense history as part of the slave trade in the 1880s.

You can also check out the Fuerte Viejo de Zanzibar which is one of the oldest forts in East Africa and the oldest building in Stone Town.

Full of history and culture, Zanzibar is a special place to visit whether you’re travelling solo, with family, or with your spouse. Combined with the stunning beaches, Zanzibar will be one of the places you’re itching to go back to as soon as you leave.
