How Many Days Do You Need in Zanzibar?
If you are starting to book your trip to Zanzibar, you might be wondering how much time you need to explore this beautiful island. If you’re not under any time constraints, try to spend 5 to 7 days in Zanzibar at least.
This will give you enough time to see the beaches, do water activities, and tour Stone Town. A week in Zanzibar also gives you enough time to make some local friends and try all the best food in Zanzibar.
If you’re coming to Tanzania for a safari, you can spend a few days in Zanzibar either before or after your trip.
How to Spend Your Days in Zanzibar
Most people start their vacation in Zanzibar by spending 2 or 3 days in Stone Town. After seeing the rich culture and history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can head to one of the many coastal areas for beach activities.
Stone Town has coastal areas so you’ll still be near the beach. However, spending a few days closer to Zanzibar’s other beaches will give you a chance to experience marine life, pure white sand, and turquoise water.
Most people also like to beach hop since there are magnificent beaches on the northern and eastern sides of the island.
How Many Days Do You Need to Visit the Beaches of Zanzibar?
How many days you spend on the beach and which beach you visit depends on the activities you want to do.
Thanks to the warm water and soft sand, some people can spend weeks just lounging on the beaches of Zanzibar. Even if you’re not a fan of sun tanning, you can still spend several days on Zanzibar’s coast.
Zanzibar is home to some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in Africa. Taking boat tours is also an excellent activity for those that might not be comfortable swimming but still want to experience the water.
If you’re not pressed for time, try to spend 3 to 4 days on the coast. You can head to the northern coast to visit beaches like Kendwa, Nungwi, and Matemwe. The eastern coast beaches are also famous including Paje and Pongwe.
How Many Days Do You Need to Visit Stone Town?
If you have limited time in Zanzibar, it’s best to stay on the beach and then head to Stone Town as a day trip. You can also spend one night in Stone Town and then head back to the coast the next morning.
If you don’t have time constraints though, you should spend 2 or 3 days in Stone Town. You can spend a few days learning about the history of Spice Island at The Old Dispensary, Changuu Island, and The Arab Fort.
You can spend the other day shopping at the Darajani Bazaar where they sell locally made crafts as well as fresh meat and produce.
Stone Town also has some of the best food in Tanzania. Make sure to try different places for lunch and dinner so you can experience a variety of cuisines. Most travellers love to try traditional Zanzibar pizza and feast on local seafood.
What If I Don’t Have Enough Time in Zanzibar?
Although we recommend you stay at least 5 days, ideally 7, we know this is not possible for everyone. You can still easily enjoy Zanzibar in fewer days. Even if you have only two days, you can spend one day in Stone Town and then head to the beach the other day.
You can also book tours of Stone Town to ensure you are seeing all the best attractions within just a few hours.
