How to Get To Tarangire National Park

If you’re coming to Tanzania to see the amazing Tarangire National Park, you might wonder about the fastest and most efficient way of getting to the park. You can either access the park by road or by air.

Getting to Tarangire by Air

Most travellers fly to Arusha Regional Airport (ARK) and then the safari company picks them up and takes them through Arusha to Tarangire National Park. Arusha’s airport is small and only serves regional airlines like Precision Air and ZanAir.

If you’re already in Tanzania, you can take a small regional plane to Arusha from other popular tourist places like Zanzibar and Dar Es Salaam.

International airlines do not fly into Arusha. If you’re coming from another country, you can fly into Julius Nyerere Airport (DAR) in Dar Es Salaam and then connect to Arusha with a local airline.

DAR is a large airport that serves many international carriers like KLM, British Airways, Emirates, and Qatar. Most of these airlines have daily or weekly flights, making catching a flight very convenient.

You can also fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and then drive or take a taxi to Arusha. JRO is located in Moshi and is a little over an hour away from Arusha.

If you have a safari booked, Tanzania Safaris driver will pick you up from Kilimanjaro International Airport and drive you to Arusha. Most of the time, you’ll spend a night in Arusha and then head to Tarangire the next day.

JRO does not serve as many airlines as DAR, but there are still many international carriers that serve this airport including KLM and Turkish Airlines. Many airlines in Africa also fly into JRO including South African Airways and Uganda Airlines.

If you’re on a tight budget and already in East Africa, you can also take a bus from Nairobi, Kenya, or Kampala, Uganda to Arusha. This journey takes longer but works for many people that have already flown to East Africa and want to use the bus system.

Charter Flights

For those wanting to connect directly to Tarangire by air, there are a few options. Tarangire has one landing strip in the northern part of the park. The landing strip is within walking distance of the main entrance of the park and is just north of the Tarangire River.

If you want to take a charter flight directly to the landing strip, you can book it on your own or through Tanzania Safaris. ZanAir and AuricAir are some of the most common airlines used for charter flights.

Some regional airlines from JRO fly directly to Tarangire, but most of them fly directly from Arusha to the landing strip in the national park.

From the landing strip, a member of the Tanzania Safaris will be there to meet you and take you to your accommodation or begin your safari.

How to Book a Flight to Tarangire

You can either have the Tanzania Safaris company book your flights for you or you can book them for yourself. If you choose to book it yourself, make sure you check different airlines to see the best prices and the schedule that works for you.

If you want to book a charter or regional flight, you can check Precision Air, Air Tanzania, Coastal Aviation, Safari Air Link, and Regional Air.
