Ngorongoro Crater Weather and Climate
Heading off on a safari through Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most exciting trips you’ll ever take!
As with any vacation, you want to make sure you pack all the correct clothing and items. Luckily, packing for Ngorongoro Crater is easy since the weather is mild and temperate all year round. There weather is beautiful no matter what season you visit, but certain areas can get cold.
There are three seasons in the Ngorongoro Crater. One dry season and two wet seasons. Here is a little more information about each of the seasons so you know what to expect.
Weather and Climate During the Dry Season
The dry season in Ngorongoro Crater is from June through October. Temperatures are usually around 19°C/66°F on the crater floor. The floor is where most of your safari activities and drives will take place.
However, you will still spend time on the crater rim where the temperature can vary significantly. It gets very cold at night during the dry season even dropping to freezing temperatures on the crater rim.
If you are doing any early morning drives, you will want to bundle up and take warm clothing. Most people choose to bring a thick jacket, a hat, and a scarf. You should also plan to bring trousers and closed-toed shoes.
During the dry season, most days are clear and sunny. There are barely any clouds in the sky.
Although October is part of the dry season, sometimes the rainy season can begin early and you’ll find short rains toward the end of the month. Make sure not to forget your rain jacket if you’re coming in the month of October.
Weather and Climate During the Wet Season
The wet seasons usually have warmer days compared to the dry season. You can expect to have temperatures in the afternoon around 23°C/73°F on the crater floor. Most people find this temperature very comfortable as the sun does not shine as bright and intense during the wet season.
On the crater rim though the temperatures during the night can very cold. Expect the lows to be around 6°C/43°F.
Short Rain Season
There are two wet seasons in Ngorongoro Crater. The “short rain” season is November and December. It never rains all day and the rainfall is usually very light. Sometimes the short rains only last one month with the other month being dry.
When it does rain, it’s usually during the afternoon hours. Since most game drives happen in the morning and evening, the rains will not interfere with your plans or wildlife viewing.
Long Rain Season
March, April, and May are known as the “long rains” season. It rains almost every day, but not all day. April and May often see cold fronts which can make for very cold morning game drives.
While the dry season is when most people visit the crater to come and see wildlife, the “long rains” season is better for those that want to come bird watching. Migratory birds are common during the heavy rains and many also breed during this season.
January and February
The weather and climate during these months vary by year and can be very unpredictable. However, there is always a time of dry weather during the two wet seasons. Most of the time it happens in January and February.
Sometimes, it can start as early as December though. If you come during this time period, you’re likely to experience dry days. Some will be sunny while others will be overcast.
Weather in Ngorongoro Conservation Area
You might have read or heard about the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It’s different than the Ngorongoro Crater itself. Most safari travellers only visit the crater, so knowing the weather and climate in this region is the most important.
The crater floor is where most of the animals live and is where you will go for game drives and wildlife viewing. However, if you are lodging in the conservation area, you will be staying on the crater rim.
Temperatures on the rim can be very cold as it’s one of the highest altitude points in the area. You’ll need to bundle up for your nights on the rim so you’re not cold and uncomfortable. The rim also sees more rainfall during the wet seasons.
