Where is Serengeti Safari Camp located?
As a mobile camp, its position shifts through the year to track the herds within the Serengeti National Park. From roughly December to March it sits on the short-grass plains around Ndutu in the south for the calving season, then breaks camp and moves north through the central Serengeti, reaching the far north for the dramatic Mara River crossings between about July and October. Each site is chosen for its proximity to the action and its quiet, uncrowded setting, and camps are reached by light aircraft to the nearest Serengeti airstrip followed by a short game-drive transfer.
Because everything packs down and travels, the camp reaches remote, wildlife-rich corners that permanent lodges cannot, leaving no lasting trace behind. It slots naturally into a wider northern-circuit itinerary and works well within a broader Luxury Tanzania safari packages plan.
Tents and accommodation
The camp has six generous canvas tents, handmade in Tanzania in a timeless safari style. Each has twin or double beds beneath a patterned headboard, bedside lamps, a writing desk, leather trunks and comfortable chairs, with mesh windows on three sides that frame the surrounding plains. A zip-through en-suite at the rear has a flush toilet, twin washbasins and a classic canvas bucket shower with hot water carried to your tent on request. The feel is authentic and uncluttered — proper canvas-and-campfire safari, with just enough comfort in all the right places.
Dining and communal areas
At the heart of camp is an open-sided mess tent with a lounge, well-stocked bar and both indoor and outdoor dining, all opening onto the view. Days begin with early coffee before dawn game drives and end with candlelit dinners glowing under turquoise hurricane lanterns, often followed by drinks around the campfire beneath a vast canopy of stars. Cooking is done fresh in the bush kitchen, and the atmosphere is relaxed, sociable and quintessentially Nomad.
Game drives and guiding
Guiding is where Serengeti Safari Camp really shines. Nomad's naturalist guides are among the most highly trained in the country, and a private guide and 4x4 vehicle come as standard, so you set your own pace and spend as long as you like with each sighting. Because the camp moves with the migration, game drives put you right among the herds and the predators that follow them — lion, cheetah and leopard — along with elephant, giraffe and a wealth of plains game and birdlife.
Walking safaris
Beyond the vehicle, guided walking safaris offer a slower, more intimate way to experience the Serengeti — reading tracks, plants and the smaller details of the bush on foot with an armed, expert guide. It is an immersive counterpoint to game viewing and a wonderful way to feel the scale of the wilderness around you. If it appeals, see our guide to the Tanzania walking safari experience.
The Great Migration
Everything about this camp is built around the Great Wildebeest Migration — the largest movement of land mammals on earth, with more than two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle circling the ecosystem in search of fresh grazing. From December to March the herds mass on the southern plains to calve, and from around July to October they gather in the north for the tense, spectacular Mara River crossings. Nomad's guides read the herds daily to find the action while keeping you away from the crowds. If you are weighing up where to see it, our Serengeti vs Masai Mara comparison is a useful place to start.
A light-touch, low-impact camp
Being mobile is not just about chasing wildlife — it is a lighter way to travel. The camp treads gently, packing up and moving on without leaving a permanent footprint, and its handmade canvas and locally crafted furnishings support Tanzanian skills and livelihoods. Wi-Fi is available but deliberately kept low-key so the mess and campfire remain sociable, screen-free spaces.
Best time to visit
Serengeti Safari Camp is designed to deliver great wildlife year-round, but the highlights are seasonal: December to March for the calving season on the southern plains, and roughly July to October for the river crossings in the north. To match your dates to the herds, see our guide to the best time to do a Tanzania safari.
