Where is Wayo Serengeti Green Camp located?

Because this is a mobile camp, its position changes through the year to track the herds within the Serengeti National Park. From roughly June to October it sits in the northern Serengeti near Nyamalumbwa, ideally placed for the Mara River crossings, and from December to April it moves to the southern plains around Kusini for the calving season. Both sites lie in quiet, wildlife-rich corners well away from the busier tourist areas, and are reached by light aircraft to Kogatende or Serengeti South, followed by a short game-drive transfer to camp.

As a fully serviced mobile camp, it leaves no permanent trace on the land, giving you access to remote wilderness that fixed lodges simply cannot reach. It pairs naturally with the wider northern circuit and works beautifully within a broader Luxury Tanzania safari packages itinerary.

Tents and accommodation

The camp has ten cosy, explorer-style tents with an unusual 180-degree mesh frontage that turns the whole front wall into a picture window onto the plains — you can watch the Serengeti straight from your bed. Each tent has a king or twin beds, bedside tables with reading lamps, a writing desk, day beds and hanging storage, plus a shaded veranda for early-morning coffee. Interiors celebrate local craftsmanship, with bed panels woven from banana leaves, Maasai cushions and Chaga-cup chandeliers. At the back, a zip-through en-suite has twin washbasins, a flush toilet and a bucket shower with hot water on request.

Dining and communal areas

At the heart of camp is an open-sided mess tent with a homely lounge, bar and both indoor and outdoor dining, but much of the magic happens around the campfire in the spirit of the great explorer safaris. Hearty meals are often cooked over an open fire and served under the stars in the warm glow of paraffin lamps. Stays are full board and include meals, drinks — beers, wine and local spirits — and scheduled activities, with hearty breakfasts before dawn drives, picnic lunches in the bush and candlelit dinners after sunset.

Walking safaris

Walking safaris are a signature of Wayo Serengeti Green Camp and, unusually, take precedence over game drives. Short walks set out from camp in the morning or afternoon, accompanied by an armed, rifle-trained Wayo guide and a Serengeti National Park ranger, while full-day walks are possible with the addition of a private vehicle. On foot you experience the ecosystem in a completely different way — reading the grasses, tracks, insects and birdlife — an immersive, almost meditative counterpoint to game viewing from a vehicle. If the idea appeals, see our guide to the Tanzania walking safari experience.

Game drives and wildlife

Game drives are included and led by Wayo Africa's highly regarded guides, who are known for prioritising wildlife away from other vehicles and managing sightings carefully. Depending on the season and the camp's location, you can expect lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants and giraffes among the resident wildlife, along with the vast herds of the migration. Private guides and vehicles can also be arranged for those who want a more tailored pace.

The Great Migration

The camp is built around the rhythm of the Great Wildebeest Migration — the largest movement of mammals on the planet, with more than two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle. From December to April the herds mass on the southern plains for calving, and from late June to October they gather in the north for the dramatic Mara River crossings. Wayo's guides are trained to read the herds and to find the action while avoiding the crowds. If you are choosing where to witness it, our Serengeti vs Masai Mara comparison is a helpful starting point.

A greener way to safari

Sustainability sits at the core of the Wayo philosophy. The camp runs on solar power, eliminates single-use plastics and, as a mobile operation, blends into the environment and leaves nothing behind when it moves. Interiors are made with local materials and craftspeople, so your stay supports Tanzanian skills and communities as well as the wilderness around you.

Best time to visit

The best time depends on which spectacle you want to see: December to April for the calving season on the southern plains, and late June to October for the river crossings in the north. The wider dry season also brings excellent general game viewing. To fine-tune your dates, see our guide to the best time to do a Tanzania safari.

Serengeti Green Camp suits travellers who value authenticity and adventure over polish — walkers, migration-chasers, couples, families and first-time safari-goers looking for genuine wilderness and great guiding at excellent value.
