Nyumbu Luxury Migration Camp is an intimate, Tanzanian-owned mobile tented camp that follows the Great Migration through the Serengeti ecosystem, pitching seasonally in the Ndutu area of the southern Serengeti and at Kogatende in the far north. With just eight en-suite tents, it places you within easy reach of the wildebeest herds — the calving grounds around Ndutu from roughly December to March, and the dramatic Mara River crossings near Kogatende from about July to October.
- Style: Small luxury mobile tented camp (8 tents)
- Location: Ndutu (Ngorongoro Conservation Area / southern Serengeti) and Kogatende (northern Serengeti)
- Best for: Front-row Great Migration access, honeymooners, families and photographers
- Ownership: Proudly indigenous, Tanzanian-owned and operated
- Signature experiences: Big Five game drives, balloon safaris, bush meals, sundowners and star gazing
Where Nyumbu Luxury Migration Camp is located
Nyumbu is a seasonal camp built to move with the herds, so its location changes with the migration calendar. For the green season it sits in the Ndutu area on the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the southern Serengeti, overlooking the open plains and Lake Masek where hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra gather to give birth. Later in the year it relocates to Kogatende in the northern Serengeti, close to the Mara River and its famous crocodile-lined crossings. Both pitches keep guests close to the action of the Great Wildebeest Migration and the big cats that follow it.
The camp and its tents
Nyumbu is a genuinely small camp of eight tastefully appointed tents, giving it a private, unhurried feel. The layout includes:
- Two permanent king-bedded tents
- Four flexible tents that convert to twin or triple configurations
- Two family tents, each with a king bed plus two separate beds and an adjoining lounge that separates the sleeping areas (ideal for two adults and two children)
Every tent is en-suite with a private bathroom and shower, and comes with a hairdryer, a safe and its own coffee station. Power is supplied by a combination of solar and generator (220–240V, British-type sockets), with 24-hour power available for guests who rely on medical equipment.
Dining, lounge and bar
Meals are served in a separate dining tent that can host private or group dining, with flexible menus that cater to most dietary requests, butler service and private or bush meals arranged on request. The shared lounge and bar tent is a comfortable retreat after a day in the bush, styled with warm African furnishings and open to the sights and sounds of the plains.
Safari experiences and activities
Game drives are led in open 4x4 safari vehicles that make photography and wildlife viewing easy. Because the camp sits in the heart of the migration corridor, sightings routinely include lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena alongside elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and antelope. Beyond game drives, Nyumbu offers:
- Hot-air balloon safaris over the plains (seasonal)
- Bush breakfasts, bush dinners and sundowners
- Star gazing under exceptionally dark skies
- Massages and spa treatments on request
Best time to visit
The right season depends on which chapter of the migration you want to witness. Stay at the Ndutu pitch between December and March for the calving season, when the plains fill with newborn wildebeest and predators are especially active. Choose the Kogatende pitch between July and October for the Mara River crossings. Because Nyumbu is a mobile camp, it opens and closes in line with the herds, so we recommend confirming dates when you plan your trip.
