Where is Arusha Villa located?
Arusha Villa sits in Kilala, between Tengeru and Usa, in the green outskirts of Arusha and about a 15-minute drive from the city centre. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is roughly 40 minutes away, so the villa works beautifully as the calm bookend to a safari — a place to shake off the flight before heading into the parks, and to relax afterwards before flying home. From the gardens you can see both Mount Meru and, on clear mornings, the snow-capped dome of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The setting is a genuine coffee plantation ringed by monumental trees, which makes it feel far more rural than its short transfer time suggests. It is a natural starting point for the northern circuit, whether you are combining it with a Luxury Tanzania safari packages itinerary or an independent trip.
Rooms and villa accommodation
There are twelve rooms in total, spread across two buildings. The main Villa holds six large double rooms and two family rooms that sleep up to five and can be converted into luxurious suites; each has a private balcony or terrace, a large bathroom and beautiful garden or mountain views. The Farmhouse, surrounded by big trees full of monkeys, has four further rooms (two double, two twin) that all interconnect, making it ideal for a large family or a group who want privacy while still using the villa's facilities.
Rooms are calm and uncluttered, with natural materials, plenty of light and doors opening onto the greenery. An extensive breakfast is always included, and complimentary coffee, tea and water are available throughout the day.
Dining and farm-to-table food
Dinner at Arusha Villa is a highlight: a tasteful three-course meal served on the veranda, followed by after-dinner drinks under the stars beside the fireplace. The kitchen leans on ingredients grown and produced on site, and deliberately limits its footprint — there is no beef or pork, with chicken, fish and a daily-changing vegetarian menu instead. Dietary requests are happily accommodated with advance notice. The hosts are committed to sourcing eggs and poultry only from cage-free farms.
The swimming pool and gardens
The villa and its surrounding gardens are built for slowing down. Multiple terraces offer shaded spots for reading and dozing in the African sun, and on warmer days the swimming pool is there to cool off in. Strolling the gardens you may spot blue and black-and-white colobus monkeys in the canopy, and over 80 bird species have been identified on the property — bring your camera and, in season, catch the purple bloom of the jacaranda.
Activities and day trips from Arusha
Arusha Villa is an ideal launch pad for day trips and the wider northern circuit. Nearby Serengeti National Park and the other headline parks are within reach on a longer safari, while closer to home the hosts arrange guided walks through the coffee and neighbouring villages, visits to the colourful Arusha market and tours of the small charity and conservation projects they support. Arusha National Park — with its crater grassland, alkaline lakes, giraffes and the slopes of Mount Meru — is a superb, low-key day out for walking, canoeing and birding.
Best time to visit
Arusha enjoys a pleasant highland climate year-round thanks to its altitude. The long dry season from June to October is the most popular window and pairs well with peak wildlife viewing on the northern circuit, while the short dry spell from late December to February is warm and green. The long rains fall mainly from March to May. For a fuller breakdown, see our guide to the best time to do a Tanzania safari.
Good to know before you stay
A few practical notes: WiFi is available on the terrace by the swimming pool rather than in the rooms, which suits the switch-off-and-unwind spirit of the place. The villa operates a no-cash policy, accepting credit or debit card payments only. The whole property can be booked exclusively for groups of up to 26 people, with half- and full-board options — well suited to families, friends, birding and photography groups or celebrations. Why stay at Arusha Villa
Arusha Villa offers something different from the big safari lodges: a warm, personal, sustainability-minded home in the coffee hills, run by hosts who love sharing their corner of Tanzania. It is comfortable and quietly luxurious without being showy, generous with home-grown food, and perfectly placed for the airport and the parks. If you want a gentle, green welcome to the north — and a peaceful place to land at the end — it is hard to beat.
